Em Beihold, chat about her upcoming Album “Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter”

By Nelson Zheng

Was there any songs that were especially challenging emotionally to write or record?

You know, I would say a lot of the ways the songs came together was like piece by piece for instance, with Scare of the Dark it truly was a chore I wrote when I was 13 and then the rest of it came together like years later. I think similarly with the song Lottery on the album, that one took a few tries to get right and things were changing even like two years later. there’s some songs that come out in 10 minutes and then there’s, some songs that’s just like truly multi year like doing little, you know tweaks,”

What about this project feels healing to your past self? What about this project speaks to your growth as a artist?

“I feel like I’m finally making the music I’ve really wanted to make, I think it’s taken a while to get there and I also just feel like when Numb Little Bug was happening, I was so new to being an artist really, in the industry and everything, and there was a lot of attention at once before I even know who I was and it’s been nice to take that time away and figure that out for myself.”

“So I do feel like I’m coming back very intentionally with exactly who Em is with this album.”
